write these words down in your dreams,
dream your dreams—self-eating serpent.

at the concert, a symphony for the damned.
another magnificent carnival for the terrible,
let's get good food fried.

every night is
as dark as the next
at the devil's fair—

take a chance and dunk the damned.
howlin', "the wicked banjo whines."

a waitress tryin' to give less for more—
a cellar locked little girl was broken before.
"it's love", she's sure, "y'all should stay a while."
she's teachin' me somethin',
swears, "i'll burn you alive to cool you down."
"can't stop for love yet—walkin' this carnival's mile."

and the sick goes onward, on and on.
farther, darker, long and gone.
frozen still—nothin' moves,
then frozen still and nothin' slows down.

a skull sick circus—must be divine.
dream walking in my waking life.
a world like this—no other alike,
payin' twice to take one man's life.

"get your ass up and go play that song"
"i already sold your bones for that damned gold guitar."
"maybe this will get you there."

"that pack of wolves is just an act—don't be scared of her."
"smells your blood—scared? she knows you are."
"got teeth in your hide and won't let go"

"and back to the weather, greater peace, equanimity."

notes from a local bar:
"alan! we're waitin' on you—maybe you can hear us."

"if i can't do something for a boy, then who the hell's a man?"

"we're still waitin' on you alan—everyone is here, we'll sing one."
"and here he is ladies and gentlemen—"

"well, shit, if i knew you was all goin' to be here—i wouldn't have delayed the show."
"and i wasn't plannin' on coming, but this damned boy wouldn't let go."
"relentless old soul."
"i was meanin' to have a band, but hell i guess i'll do it myself."
"let's see what i can do for y'all tonight, here it goes."
"please don't say i didn't try—thanks y'all."
